Rauw Alejandro
Despacito was first released by Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi in 2017, and quickly became the number one streamed track in just 6 months. This blend of reggaeton and pop music didn't just bring an interest to the style, but also to Latin music generally. In 2015, there were two predominantly Spanish-language tracks on the Billboard Top 100 and in 2016 there were four. In the height of Despacito's commercial success in 2017, 19 tracks primarily in Spanish hit into the Top 100. It climbed to 41 in 2020. Justin Bieber's remix in two languages Despacito was released in 2017. Then, popular musicians began collaborating with reggaeton performers. Drake collaborated with Bad Bunny in the project MIA MIA (2018) while Madonna worked with Maluma on Medellin. In 2020, a few Reggaeton performers were complaining about how the genre was moving toward mainstream. Yet, a newer generation, Rauw Alejandro was determined to maintain the development. It often blended elements from electronic dance music, as well as different genres.
