Rauw Alejandro
In 2017, Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi as well as Daddy Yankee released Despacito and it was the top-streamed track in just six months. This mix of reggaeton and pop music has not only brought an interest to the genre, but also to Latin music as a whole. The Billboard Top 100 featured two songs which were Spanish mostly, and four others in the year 2016. At the height of Despacito's popularity, 19 tracks mainly in Spanish appeared on the Top 100. In 2020, there will be 41 songs in this category. Following Justin Bieber's bilingual remix of Despacito (2017) well-known artists quickly began to collaborate with reggaeton musicians, such as Drake and Bad Bunny on MIA (2018) and Madonna and Maluma with Maluma on Medellin (2019). By 2020 a few reggaeton musicians were unhappy with the genre's direction toward the mainstream. However, a younger generation such as Rauw Alejandro wanted to continue the evolution of reggaeton. He often used elements of electronic dance music, and other genres.
