Despacito was first released by Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi in 2017, and quickly became the number one streamed track in just 6 months. The song is a blend of reggaeton and pop music was not only a way to bring renewed interest to reggaeton, but also drew interest towards Latin music in general. Billboard's Top 100 featured two songs in Spanish most of the time, and 4 more songs in the year the year 2016. In the height of Despacito's chart-topping success in 2017, 19 tracks primarily in Spanish hit into the Top 100. The number grew to 41 by 2020. After Justin Bieber released his bilingual remix of Despacito in 2017, popular artists started to work together with reggaeton singers. Drake and Bad Bunny have collaborated for the track MIA MIA (2018) in addition to Madonna and Maluma worked together on Medellin 2019, which was released in 2019. In 2020, a few Reggaeton musicians were expressing their displeasure with the trend of the genre towards the mainstream. In contrast, a young generation, Rauw Alejandro was determined to push forward the progression. His music often contained elements from electronic dance and other genres.
